The Resident's Voice

Lived Experiences
and Quality of Life
at the End of Life
in Long-Term Care Homes

In The Resident's Voice, long-term care home residents and their families talk about their past experiences with long-term care and share their current perspectives on what constitutes quality of life.

These stories have been compiled for use as an educational resource. The Resident's Voice is intended to create an opportunity for long-term care home staff to reflect on what they have heard and how it may relate to the care they provide in order to help generate ideas for possible improvements. Discussion guides are being developed to help homes make the best use of these stories.

The stories in The Resident's Voice deal with issues such as falls, consistency of staff assignment and pressure ulcers, and illustrate why the Residents First initiative has chosen these as focus areas for its quality improvement work.

Each story is told in the unique voice of a long-term care home resident or family member. Stories have not been edited for content and the accompanying photographs were chosen by the storytellers.
